Decreased hearing can occur at any time for a variety of reasons. It is common for a certain amount of ability to be lost as the years go by or after being subjected to loud sounds for a prolonged period of time. But there are more reasons why the ability to hear can be lost. Here are two, chronic diseases and medications .

Chronic diseases that can affect hearing loss

There are some chronic diseases that can affect hearing loss. As their name suggests, they are degenerative diseases that progress slowly and cause a gradual decrease in the sense of hearing. These are three that may have a decrease in hearing acuity as a result of the condition.

Otitis

Otitis is a very common disease in both children and adults. It is an infection that, if not cured well, can become chronic. Continued recurrences of this disease result in impaired hearing.

Chronic mastoiditis

Chronic mastoiditis is an extension of otitis. The infection moves from the ear to the mastoid bone of the skull, causing more or less frequent episodes of deafness. This ailment has been growing in recent years.

Autoimmune disease of the inner ear

This type of chronic autoimmune disease can also cause hearing loss. In addition, it can cause fluctuating tinnitus and hearing fullness.

Medications that can affect hearing loss

Some medications can also cause hearing loss. You may find them as a transient side effect. These are some of the most common:

  • Pain relievers. Even common painkillers can cause hearing loss, as is the case with Aspirin. That is, if they are taken in very high quantities.
  • Anti-inflammatories. Ibuprofen, naproxen and the like can reduce circulation in the cochlea, leading to hearing loss.
  • Antibiotics. They can lead to hearing problems if used long and in high amounts.
  • Antidepressants. Antidepressants can significantly impair the ability to hear, as well as causing frequent tinnitus.
  • Chemotherapy. Some medications such as cisplatin -Platinol- or vincristine -Oncovin- can considerably damage the hearing system.
