Why is it important to have a hearing test?
"I hear perfectly well. I don't need a hearing aid. You're just too far away from me!"
Many of us have heard these excuses a thousand times. If the people you love say you can't hear them, maybe it's time to schedule a hearing check. At least there are plenty of good reasons for them to have a hearing test. We give you 4 good reasons.
1 Untreated hearing loss could lead to cognitive decline
When the brain does not receive the signals it expects from the ear, it will begin to spend other resources trying to understand what is happening. This means that other functions in the brain may have fewer resources to do their job.
When hearing loss is severe, this could potentially lead to cognitive decline, Alzheimer's or dementia. A hearing aid can prevent this from happening, or at least delay the effects of the hearing loss. Therefore, if you need a hearing aid, it's a good idea to start by getting a hearing test.
2 There may be an underlying cause of your hearing loss
Decreased listening is not always caused by age or exposure to loud sounds, but has very different origins. Diabetes is one of them; in fact, a study showed that people with diabetes were more than twice as likely to suffer from hearing loss as those without it.
Ear infections and cardiovascular disease have also been linked to hearing loss and, in very rare cases, so have tumours in the outer or middle ear.
3 Untreated hearing loss can lead to mental problems
It's not uncommon to want to stay home and not attend the big family dinner when you can't follow the conversation anyway. Many people who don't hear well have this feeling. But severing ties with your social life could make you feel lonely, depressed, or isolated. Research suggests that social support from family and friends may decrease the risk of depression from untreated hearing loss, so it's important to continue your social life. And, with your hearing aids on, having dinner with your family won't be so exhausting!
4 You can take steps to hear better again
If you are diagnosed with a hearing loss, you may be advised to wear a hearing aid. The good news is that hearing aids go a long way towards restoring your hearing and, crucially, maintaining your quality of life.
Although it may seem unnecessary, a hearing aid can help the functions of your brain and prevent hearing loss or any other untreated effect of hearing loss.
Aren't there enough reasons?
Well, there's always the free coffee bonus and the fact that your family and friends will be thankful that you went. But, in reality, you should do it for your overall health and well-being. Getting a hearing test doesn't take long and it doesn't hurt...

But why don't people recognize that they have a hearing loss?
There are 3 main reasons:
1) Hearing loss can occur naturally over time and is not always noticeable.
In today's world there are so many sounds around us that it is difficult to concentrate. Hearing loss is not like turning down the volume of television sound. Most of us will lose hearing in the high frequencies first while maintaining good hearing in the low frequencies.
This is why you will hear many people with a hearing loss complain that they hear as loudly as before, but can no longer understand what they are being told.
2) It is easy to dismiss a potential problem if you are not ready to face the possibility of it happening.
On average, it can take up to 7 years for someone to do something about their hearing at the time of initial diagnosis. Imagine all the sounds that are lost in a 7-year period! Don't lose your life out of fear!
3) Hearing loss is most noticeable to friends and family first.
They can't hear people calling them, so when they finally hear them, it's the first time. For them, they don't understand why everyone is so impatient. This is where those relationships can begin to tense up.
The person who has trouble hearing well gets tired of the attitude and "scolding" friends, and the family gets tired of repeating itself. If a solution is not diagnosed early, those relationships will eventually give up and isolation may result. This is what we want to stop every day, people don't have to live this way.
