What is presbycusis?
Growing up means continuing to learn things every day, meet new friends, or discover new corners of the world. It means dreaming more so that we don't stop being children and keep trying until those dreams come true. Perhaps growing up is not so negative except when health is affected. It is precisely in old age when presbycusis appears, the loss of hearing sensitivity related to the passage of time, that is, to the years.
Causes of presbycusis
The main reason for this is the progressive deterioration of the inner ear, which makes it difficult to hear high frequencies (we are referring to those between 2000 and 8000 Hertz).
However, presbycusis can be enhanced by external factors directly affecting the ear.
Excessive exposure to very noisy environments, diabetes, or the intake of ototoxic medications also influence presbycusis.
Most common symptoms of presbycusis
Usually, they start to be noticed progressively and gradually. That's why sometimes we don't pay attention to them. However, presbycusis continues and as a consequence, people who suffer from it become isolated. The best thing is that at the first symptoms, you should consult a professional to take solutions. These symptoms can range from ringing in the ear, known as tinnitus, extreme sensitivity to loud noises, or difficulty understanding sounds containing letters such as "t" or "s".
For example, hearing aids
After a diagnosis of presbycusis, hearing aids are the best solution. The choice of model will depend on the result of the audiometry and the assessment of your specialist. Sometimes, it is recommended to carry out a hearing re-education, with speech therapists and speech therapists that help us to recover the understanding of the word and hearing. Finally, in the most severe cases if the person does not go well with the hearing aids, there is another alternative: hearing implants.
At Claso we want to be by your side so that presbycusis does not affect your quality of life. Because even as we get older, we want to keep hearing good news.
